Godot aaya kya…? @ Lamakaan, Banjara Hills

Godo aaya kya…? (Waiting for Godot) is an absurdist play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, wait endlessly and in vain for someone named Godot to arrive. Godot’s absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play,

Passes @ Rs.100

I don’t know who Godot is. I don’t even know (above all don’t know) if he exists. And I don’t know if they believe in him or not – those two who are waiting for him. The other two who pass by towards the end of each of the two acts, that must be to break up the monotony. All I knew I showed. It’s not much, but it’s enough for me, by a wide margin. I’ll even say that I would have been satisfied with less. As for wanting to find in all that a broader, loftier meaning to carry away from the performance, along with the program and the Eskimo pie, I cannot see the point of it. But it must be possible … Estragon, Vladimir, Pozzo, Lucky, their time and their space, I was able to know them a little, but far from the need to understand. Maybe they owe you explanations. Let them supply it. Without me. They and I are through with each other.

A talk on Folk Art, Craft & Culture of Telengana By Ravindra Sharma @ Lamakaan, Banjara Hills Sunday, May 8

About Ravindra Sharma:

Ravindra Sharma is an artist, a sculptor trained at the Baroda School of Art. His Brahmin family came from the Punjab a generation before him and settled in Adilabad with a small railway catering business. He was a maverick from his childhood, visiting the low caste Nakashi artisan households to watch wooden figures being carved and painted, after which his grandmother would not allow him into the house until he was purified by having a bucket of water poured over him. He returned from Baroda in 1978 and set up the Kala Ashram as a resource centre for the local fp;k arts and crafts. Guruji as he is known has shared the lives of many of the local jatis, travelling through the forests with parrot-catchers, attending the ten day wedding celebrations of the Mathurias and the jatras of the metal casting Ohtaris. He has learnt wax wire casting from the Ojhas and pigment painting from the Nakashis. Guruji has taught art in a tribal school for ten years, teaching Kolam boys first how to draw, then to paint, and later to model in matti to express their own unique inner world.
