Azaad Bazaar is India’s First LGBT pride store

City’s LGBT pride store moving to Goa
Manthan K Mehta | Sep 25, 2011, 01.52AM IST

Azaad Bazaar is Moving to Goa! Our Mumbai store will close on Oct 29.

We will be taking Azaad Bazaar on the road for a few months, doing exhibitions in various cities starting with the Goa Saturday Night Market. We will be shifting base to Goa for 6 months, so our Bandra outlet will close on Saturday October 29… and a new adventure will begin!

Last Month Offers! HUGE DISCOUNTS!
For all you shopaholics this is the one and only chance to avail of HUGE discounts at the store. T-shirts are now down from 499 to 399, and Mugs are down from 295 to 235! There is also a big discount on various accessories and other merchandise.

We will be back in Mumbai for our annual “Get Dressed for Pride” exhibition in 2012, and might look at reopening in another location in Mumbai later that year. So for now, this is not goodbye… it’s till we see you again!

If you’re in Goa, come visit us at Ingo’s Saturday Night Bazaar every Saturday night from 6pm to 1am at Arpora (near Anjuna). The market will start sometime in end November or early December 2011 and go on till April 2012.

Looking back…
While every aspect of running the store has been memorable, our interactions with people are perhaps the things that we will cherish the most. The couples who celebrated their ring ceremonies here, the closeted people who gathered up the courage to come in and introduce themselves, the parents of lgbt kids who we’ve met, the people from every corner of the globe and the tradition of tying rakhi to the store.

Simran and I always wanted Azaad Bazaar to be a platform for creativity. And over the last two years we have had the privilege interact with and stock products by over 50 talented artists, filmmakers, authors, designers, musicians, hobbyists, and social organisations.

The space has become more of a community center than store, hosting meetings, student interactions, haircuts, documentary film shoots, book readings, discussion groups, and of course, endless cups of coffee therapy.

These four walls have seen a lot in the last two years, and we hope that you will join us in saying goodbye to this location. Otherwise we’ll see you in Goa, or maybe in your home town!

Azaad Bazaar is India’s First LGBT pride store. The label carries everything from t-shirts and accessories to mugs, notebooks and fridge magnets, to disco balls and fur handcuffs.

What We Do
At Azaad Bazaar, we strive to create a language of design that is a seamless blend of Indian sensibilities and international “Rainbow Pride” symbols. We also have a large number of straight supporters, with about 50% of revenue coming from non-LGBT clients. This is why most of our products have alternative designs that are subtle, thoughtful, and incredibly “straight friendly”.

Community Building
The Azaad Bazaar brand is not just products and sales… it is about people and a sense of responsibility to the community. The website ,store and office phone often double as a helpline and community resource. We are also in the process of putting together a nation wide list of help lines and queer friendly businesses.
