akshara Theatre presents a dramatised book-reading of
Rabindranath Tagore’s
The Kabuliwallah
As part of its monthly series of dramatised book readings, Akshara
presents Rabindranath Tagore’s classic story The Cabuliwallah on
Sunday, January 31 at 5.30pm.
Set in early 20th century Kolkata, Tagore’s story delicately explores
the bonds of friendship, affection and parting in the relationship
between the burly, rough ‘n’ tough Rehman, the Pathan trader from
Afghanistan and five-year old Mini, daughter of the story’s Bengali
bhadra-lok protagonist.
Humour and gentle melancholy come to the fore in a story that finds
resonance even today.
While Jalabala Vaidya plays the protagonist-author, Sunit Tandon plays
the part of the Cabuliwallah, and little Jyoti Sharma (a young Akshara
Theatre student) plays five-year old Mini. Nisa Shetty plays the mother
and Kinjal Dua plays Mini as a young bride.
Music for the show comprises delightful original compositions by Gopal
Sharman, as well as an emotional rendition of the golden oldie “Ae Mere
Pyaare Watan…” from the acclaimed Bimal Roy film Kabuliwala. Directed
by Anasuya Vaidya Shetty. Music and graphics by Gopal Sharman.
Actors and audience get together after the show over a cup of the
Akshara’s world-famous soup and nibblies!
